Rhizo, an innovative app designed for Big Band orchestras, is transforming the way musicians collaborate during live performances.
With 10–15 musicians on stage, traditional interactions rely on physical cues and gestures, often limiting creativity and cohesion. Rhizo bridges this gap by introducing a real-time, interactive platform that enhances spontaneity while maintaining harmony.
Big Band musicians thrive on dynamic, real-time interactions to navigate their performances. However, this process lacks technological support, making it difficult to achieve structured yet flexible collaboration. Musicians needed a tool to guide, track, and enhance their creative efforts without restricting their artistic flow.
We worked with Rhizo to develop a platform that fosters innovation in live performances. Rhizo allows musicians to select from multiple musical streams, providing visibility into each band member’s choices during the performance. This feature not only supports real-time synchronization but also introduces new influences, encouraging experimentation and creativity.
Our human-centered design process focused on understanding the unique dynamics of Big Band performances. We began with journey mapping to uncover pain points, followed by the creation of user personas and flows to address the needs of conductors, musicians, and audiences. Prototypes were tested iteratively to ensure the app’s functionality met real-world demands. The final product, built using Swift UI for iOS, combined intuitive design with robust technical performance, delivering a seamless user experience.
